Baladi-rite Prayer
The Baladi-rite Prayer is the oldest known prayer-rite used by Yemenite Jews, transcribed in a ''Siddur'' called ''Tiklāl'' in Yemenite Jewish parlance.
It contains the prayers used by Israel for the entire year, as well as the format prescribed for the various blessings (benedictions) recited.〔Amram Qorah, ''Sa'arat Teyman'' (2nd edition), (p. 96 ) (Hebrew); Yitzhak Ratzaby, ''Sefer Shulhan Arukh Ha-mequtzar'', ''Orach Chaim'' vol. 3 (Section 105, note 15), Benei Barak 2001 (Hebrew)〕 Until the 16th century, all of Yemen's Jewry made use of this one rite.〔Aharon Gaimani, ''Three Rulings in One Responsum of Rabbi Yihya Qafih, of Blessed Memory'', published in: Tehuda (volume 30), ed. Yosef Tobi, Netanya 2014, p. 83 (Hebrew)〕 Older ''Baladi-rite'' prayer books were traditionally compiled in the Babylonian supralinear punctuation,〔Moshe Gavra, ''Studies in the Yemenite Prayerbook'', vol. 1 (the Passover Haggadah), Kiryat Ono (Israel) 1988, pp. 258–354; Shows photocopies of different Yemenite Prayer books, the earliest from the year 1345 (now preserved at the Jewish Theological Seminary of New York, MS. no. 3015), and the latest from 1656, all of which bear Babylonian supralinear punctuation.〕 although today, all have transformed and strictly make use of the Tiberian vocalization. The text, however, follows the traditional Yemenite punctuation of Hebrew words.

The ''Baladi''-rite prayer book (''Tiklāl'') remained in manuscript form until 1894, when the first printed edition was published in Jerusalem by the Yemenite Jewish community,〔Shimon Greidi, ''Sefer Yamim Yedaberu: Ketivah, Arikhah, Hadpessah—1933–1993'', Tel-Aviv/Jaffa 1995, pp. 71–72 (Hebrew)〕 which included the ''Etz Ḥayim'' commentary written by Rabbi Yihyā Saleh. Today, it is used primarily by the ''Baladi-rite'' congregations of Yemenite Jews in Israel and in the Diaspora. Etymologically, the word ''Baladi'' is an Arabic word denoting "of local use" (i.e. Yemeni), as distinguished from the prayer-rite widely used in the north (i.e. Syria and the Land of Israel), which is called in Arabic ''Shāmi''.
